Joinery Care & Maintenance

Handling

Before delivery the customer must prepare a suitable area for receiving the delivered goods. This area must be cool, dry and not exposed to the elements (eg frost, wind, rain, direct sun).

For supply-only orders the customer must provide adequate labour to assist with unloading and to check the goods are correct.

Storage

The customer must provide a clean, safe, dry area for storage.

  • Goods must be stacked vertically on bearers to ensure adequate ventilation.

  • Product wrapping must be removed if goods are to be stored for longer than 30 days to ensure adequate ventilation.

  • Never store products where wet trades (eg plasterers) have recently been working or where walls, floors or surfaces are still drying.

  • Never store goods in direct sunlight or dark areas for long periods to avoid paint or surface discolouration.

  • Do not lay products flat on bearers. Products must be stored vertically to protect glazing and coatings.

Installation by others

Frames are to be installed into openings in accordance with these instructions:

Maintain a manufactured 5 – 10mm perimeter gap from frame to structure.

  • Ensure the outer frame is square.

  • Ensure frame jambs are plumb, straight and parallel with each other.

  • Ensure outer frame is installed without twisting or distortion.

Position fixings between 150mm & 250mm up and down from all four corners, and 600mm centres thereafter. If the frame exceeds 1800mm an additional fixing will be required in the head member.

Rooms must be well ventilated as excessive moisture can cause timber products to swell and distort. Excessive moisture can also cause rust on internal metal components on ironmongery.

Building in of joinery is not guaranteed under this policy.

General Product Care

Adequate building ventilation is required after installation, particularly when wet trades have been working in the vicinity. Excessive moisture may cause timber to swell or result in surface blistering and discolouration.

Take particular care to protect joinery products during the building process. Ensure they are not stored where falling debris could cause damage to decorative coatings, weather seals and ironmongery.

Adequate ventilation is required after building works have finished to avoid high humidity. Abnormal levels of humidity can increase or decrease moisture content in joinery.

Ironmongery disconnected or removed must be reconnected immediately to avoid damaging the joinery.

If resistance is felt on opening window casements, sashes or doors always investigate the cause. Never force products open or shut as this could cause damage.

Lubricate moving parts at regular intervals, clean ironmongery with non corrosive cleaners.

Wipe internal and external faces of the frame clean; clean glass and opening members.

Cleaning

Doors and windows should be cleaned regularly to prolong their life. The guidelines below apply to both interior and exterior surfaces.

Wash vertical painted surfaces from top to bottom to avoid streaking. Superficial dirt should be removed with water and a damp cloth. Use mild household detergent for heavier dirt, being careful to remove excess detergent with a damp cloth.

Never allow abrasive tools, strong detergents, ammonia, bleach or harsh cleaning chemicals to come into contact with finished surfaces.

Do not use solvents on any surfaces.

Avoid leaving detergent and liquid cleaners on surfaces to avoid adsorption.

Avoid saturating the product

Cleaning cloths must be free from grit and debris to avoid damaging finished surfaces.

Do not use a jet washer or pole cleaner as these could damage surfaces.

Ironmongery care

CARE INSTRUCTIONS & MAINTENANCE CARE OF FINISHES

Like all metal based products ironmongery requires regular cleaning to prevent deposits from accumulating and damaging the items appearance. The following instructions will enable you to prolong the lifetime of the finish of these products.

PLATED FINISHES

Occasional wiping with a soft clean cloth and cleaning with a non-abrasive wax polish

POLISHED AND LACQUERED FINISHES

Clean with a damp clean cloth moistened with soapy water or wipe with a soft cloth using a non abrasive wax polish. It should be noted that the life of lacquer on most items is limited and will eventually break down. Adverse conditions such as industrial pollution, sea air, acid rain, abrasion etc and repeated continual handling may cause the coating to deteriorate prematurely.

BLACK AND PEWTER ANTIQUE FURNITURE

Iron is vulnerable to rusting and whilst we make every effort to cover all areas of products to avoid rusting it is essential to maintain these items especially in external situations, to try and prevent rusting. It is recommended to give items an occasional light oiling. This can be done by wiping the items with a lightly oiled cloth to help prevent a build up of harmful deposits which will causecorrosion.

STAINLESS STEEL

Whilst Stainless Steel is a strong durable material, it will, if not maintained regularly show signs of rusting, especially in Coastal areas or areas with aggressive atmospheres such as swimming pools.

We therefore recommend the following cleaning procedures.

Clean regularly with a dry cloth or duster. Periodic washing with warm soapy water and then dried with a clean cloth. Wipe occasionally with a good quality silicone wax polish.

APPLIED FINISHES

Finishes such as bronze, rustic, tin and black nickel are what is known as an applied finish and these should be cleaned the same as the polished and lacquered finishes are . It should be noted that due to the way this finish is applied that products may vary between batches and types of product.

IT SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED HOWEVER THAT THESE FINISHES WILL NATURALLY WEAR OVER TIME

OPERATIONAL MAINTENANCE

For all lever & Knob handles on rose please check the operation periodically and adjust any loose fixings as necessary including the spindle and/or any related grub screws and ensure they are tight. The process should be followed on a regular basis (Usually every 3 months) to ensure your product performs to the very best level possible.

For all pull handles ensure that the bolt through fixings and grub screws are tight and adjust as necessary. This process should be followed up on a regular basis.

Silver bi-chromate hardware is tested to EN 1670 corrosion resistance Class 4. However the following measures still need to be taken into account to help preserve the surface finish of bi-chromate hardware fitted to timber joinery.

Hardware and rebate areas need to be sufficiently ventilated to prevent condensations forming.

During building stages, windows and doors should be kept open, or in vents position as much as possible to allow air flow.

Take extra care during building phase of the property or extension works - plaster, cement & building dust will attack and corrode the joinery’s hardware. Care should be taken to keep hardware clean and free from deposits and soiling from this type of building material.

DO NOT use aggressive cleaners such as bleach, caustic or acid based cleaning materials or detergents containing chloride, or any other strong household cleaning products.

DO NOT use abrasive materials (like steel wool), files or other hard objects against the hardware.

If choosing a beeswax finish, please consider the following advice and care instructions-

To ensure the finish on your beeswax product always remains at its best, we would advise re-coating your product with our ‘Maintenance Wax’ (33002) from time to time. This adds further protection to the metal and helps to prevent any rust or white blooms forming. Due to temperature changes or packaging, a Beeswax product may occasionally show signs of a white bloom upon opening. This can be buffed with a soft cloth to remove.

Please note that where possible we would recommend using our External Beeswax in areas of your property with high moisture content, such as bathrooms or kitchens. Light surface rust may appear if using our standard beeswax in damp internal environments, but this can be removed with ease with 00 grade wire wool and a reapplication of our ‘Maintenance Wax’ (33002). For accompanying external products, we recommend using our external beeswax finish.

Maintenance wax can be found on the From The Anvil website -

https://www.fromtheanvil.co.uk/products/maintenance-wax.

All ironmongery should be maintained regularly to follow manufacturer’s guidelines, if you would like copies of these please let us know.

Joinery Decoration

Joinery is supplied to customer with all primers and one top coat, for final topcoat to be applied after joinery installation by other parties/customer - unless stated in quote differently.

All colour choices are customers responsibility, and all decoration maintenance after installation is customers responsibility. Due to the to nature of colour matching, we do not guarantee a 100% match for colour choice.
